Planning a Babymoon
After the initial excitement of those two little words, you think, 'My days of travel are over!' Well, whether that's true or not is yet to be seen. BUT, while you can, you better get on planning a babymoon! Here are some tips:
- Plan for your second trimester. You're far enough along that you're in the 'safe' zone, but you're not big enough that you are uncomfortable. This goes without saying, but the get okay from your doctor
- Where to go? I know there are times to push the limits, but I didn't think this was one of them. After cancelling potential babymoon trips to Mexico and Brazil right as Zika came out, we decided to play this one on the straight and narrow. Besides, this is your time to relax before the chaos of a baby. Who wants to worry about drinking water and mosquito borne diseases? We decided on Florence and Rome.
- Additionally, pick somewhere with amazing food. Food is your only vice while pregnant. Enjoy it
- If there's a time to splurge on your hotel rooms, it is now. We rarely use our rooms on international trips for more than sleeping, but build in time for rest and naps. And the spa. In a big, fluffy robe. Now is the time to be pampered
- Drink enough water on the flights to ensure you are walking to the bathroom every hour or so. Prevents blood clots and will maybe help you avoid wearing ugly compression stockings
- Think about what creature comforts you need and plan ahead - I had a stuffy nose all pregnancy, so I had the hotel concierges arrange for humidifiers for my rooms. Pack whatever doctor approved medicines you may need - if you have a headache, you don't want only be able to get your hands on Advil, when only Tylenol is approved. This isn't the time to pack on the fly and, just think - it is preparing you for traveling with a baby when you need to bring everything plus the kitchen sink
- Finally, if you plan to do maternity pictures, consider getting them done on your babymoon. Your bump may not be that big, but how many times will you have the opportunity to get professional pictures done away from home? Mine were done by the talented Andrea Matone in Rome.
