Savannah, GA Recommendations
I had no idea how much I would love Savannah. LOVE LOVE. We spent four days there on a family vacation and here are my faves:
No open container rule. Stroll the historic, leafy squares with a beverage of choice in your hands
The Historic District - gorgeous old town homes, horse-drawn carriages, all the Southern charm you could ever want. If you've read or seen Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil, this will give you your Jimmy Williams fix
River Street - mini New Orleans. Take a walk up and down, pick up a drink from Wet Willie's and enjoy the chintz. Huey's on the river does a great NOLA-style brunch (bloody's and mimosas were a treat there)
Paris Market and Brocante - gorgeous combo of retail space and an authentic Parisian cafe on Broughton Street. Most stores here are ones you have at home, but this one stands out
Red Clover - adorable, contemporary clothes with a Southern flair
Andaz Hotel & Bar - central location and the bar is top notch. Try the mint julep and the burrata appetizer. And, don't forget to ask for the candied bacon bar snack. Yes, you read that right
Cotton & Rye - a quick cab out of the central districts takes you here and it is worth it! Indoor/outdoor restaurant that does a modern flair on traditional Southern cooking. Get the fried chicken thighs, pork chop, beef tartare, and shrimp and grits
A.lure - more Southern cooking, but in a formal setting. The meatloaf has foie gras in it and we fought over the braised rabbit ravioli.
Moon River Brewing Co. - only go if you can sit outside in the courtyard and have some shade. Wild Wacky Wit was my favorite brew
Rocks on the Roof at the Bohemian Hotel - great rooftop bar that overlooks the Savannah River
The Olde Pink House - a bit touristy, but you can't visit Savannah without checking out this gorgeous restaurant that is Savannah to its core. The Gin Proper drink will treat you right, as well as the shrimp and grits appetizer
Westin Savannah Harbor - a short ferry ride across the river from downtown, this resort has the look and feel of South Florida, while being a stone's throw from your quintessential gentile Southern town. Take advantage of the PGA worthy golf course (my husband did) and the resort pool
Don't bother with Lady & Sons - I got a few recommendations to eat at Paula Deen's restaurant. I went against my gut and stopped in for appetizers. Definitely over hyped and not worth the time.
And don't forget the bugspray! I did. And I'm still scratching.
Have you experienced Savannah's Southern charm? What did you think?
