Ciao. Hola. Bonjour.

Welcome to my blog and my adventures in travel, food, and drink. Hope you have a nice stay!

Washington, D.C. Recommendations

Washington, D.C. Recommendations

Our nation's capital. There's a different buzz in this city that I can't describe (maybe it's the nation at work?) and I love visiting.  Bonus points that it's pretty close for those that live in the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast. The major sites are pretty obvious, so I'll leave those out.

Hotels: Tons of chains and boutique hotels in this city, but we all know I'm partial to earning/redeeming points, so my two favorites are the J.W. Marriott and the St. Regis - both are a stone's throw from the White House. The J.W. is my standard "go to," but when we want a treat, the decadent chandeliers and champagne saboring of the St. Regis is always a good choice

Food: My favorites are below and remember to include brunch in your DC pans!

  • Huge fan of chef Jose Andres - I doubt you can go wrong with any of his restaurants, but Zaytinya (upscale Greek) and China Chilcano (ceviche!) are great. Also, barmini is one of the greatest craft cocktail bars I've ever been to. Reservations are necessary and their 6 cocktail tasting, while pricey, is such a unique, fun night out for a special occasion

  • Blue Duck Tavern has a sticky bun that's out of this world

  • Fiola Mare - overlook the Potomac at the Georgetown Waterfront while indulging in their ridiculous bread basket and shrimp & grits

  • Pearl Dive Oyster - festive, packed spot with an emphasis on oysters/seafood

  • Le Diplomat - haven't personally been here because the menu too closely mirrors their sister restaurant in Philly, which is one of my local favorites (I try to try different places in other cities), but because of my love for Parc in Philly, I would recommend this as a must try

  • Farmers Fishers Bakers - casual brunch spot on the Georgetown waterfront

  • Founding Farmers - festive spot close to the White House with great brunch cocktails

  • Rasika - upscale Indian food that blew our minds

  • Round Robin Bar at the Willard - grab a drink a this circular bar near the White House and soak up the feeling that Cyrus Beane is going to slink in at any moment

P.S. The Smithsonian museums are free, so if you want to wander into the Museum of American History for 20 minutes only to look at the First Lady's dresses, go for it (speaking from experience here)!

P.P.S. Don't miss the great designer shopping (or window shopping) in Georgetown!
